Overview

Our 3 days Rwanda gorilla safari is the perfect choice for travellers who have limited time but still want a powerful, once‑in‑a‑lifetime experience in Volcanoes National Park. In just three unforgettable days you’ll trek endangered mountain gorillas, track playful golden monkeys and immerse yourself in authentic Rwandan culture at the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village. Pre‑ and post‑tour accommodation in Kigali can be arranged on request, making this a smooth, hassle‑free short safari.

Day 1: Kigali City Tour & Scenic Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Your 3 days Rwanda gorilla safari begins in Kigali, one of Africa’s cleanest and most welcoming capitals. After meeting your professional driver–guide, you start with a guided city tour. You’ll wander through colourful local food and craft markets, where you can sample tropical fruits, browse handmade souvenirs and see everyday Kigali life up close.

A major highlight of the morning is a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, a moving and beautifully curated centre that honours the more than one million Rwandans who lost their lives in 1994. This visit provides powerful context for Rwanda’s remarkable journey of healing and reconciliation.

After a tasty lunch in Kigali, you leave the city behind and drive north through rolling green hills and traditional villages towards Volcanoes National Park. The scenery along this route is stunning, with terraced farms, mist‑covered valleys and the dramatic Virunga volcanoes rising ahead. On arrival at your comfortable lodge near the park, you check in, enjoy dinner and receive a briefing about the next day’s gorilla trek. Relax by the fire or on your veranda and soak in the peaceful atmosphere of the Rwandan countryside.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking & Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village Experience

Day two is the major highlight of your 3 days Rwanda gorilla safari. After an early breakfast, you transfer to the Kinigi park headquarters for a 07:00 am briefing by experienced rangers. Volcanoes National Park is home to 12 habituated gorilla families, including Bwenge, Hirwa, Ugenda, Sabyinyo, Umubano, Karisimbi, Susa, Amahoro, Agashya, Kwitonda, Igisha and Muhoza. Because only 96 gorilla permits are issued per day, it is very important to secure your permit well in advance to guarantee your trek.

You will be allocated a gorilla family according to your fitness level and interests, then begin your hike into the forest with skilled trackers and guides. The trek can last anywhere from about 30 minutes to 5 hours depending on where the gorillas nested the previous night, and the altitude ranges between 2,500 m and 4,000 m. The forest is full of beauty – lush vegetation, birdsong, fresh mountain air – and every step builds the excitement of what lies ahead.

Once you find your gorilla family, everything else fades away. For a full hour you watch these gentle giants as they feed, groom each other, care for their babies and occasionally interact with curious visitors. It is an emotional, humbling wildlife encounter that many guests describe as one of the most memorable moments of their lives. Porters are available to carry your daypack and support you on steep sections; using them not only makes your trek more comfortable but also directly benefits local families.

In the afternoon, your adventure continues with a visit to the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village, a community project where former poachers have become passionate conservation ambassadors. Here you are welcomed with energetic traditional dances and drumming, learn about local customs and beliefs, join a short community walk and see demonstrations such as banana beer brewing and herbal medicine preparation. This experience adds a rich cultural dimension to your Rwanda gorilla safari, helping you connect with the people who live around the park.

Day 3: Golden Monkey Tracking & Return to Kigali

On your final day, you return to Kinigi for another 07:00 am briefing, this time for golden monkey tracking. Volcanoes National Park protects two habituated troops of these rare and beautiful primates, one on the slopes of Karisimbi and the other on Mount Sabinyo. Golden monkeys are playful, fast‑moving and highly photogenic, with bright golden‑orange fur that stands out against the green bamboo forest.

The trek to see them is generally easier than gorilla tracking, making it a fun and relaxing way to end your 3 days Rwanda gorilla safari. You spend time watching them jump from branch to branch, feed on bamboo shoots and interact within their social groups, while your guide shares interesting facts about their behaviour and conservation.

After the trek you return to the lodge for an early lunch, check out and begin the scenic drive back to Kigali. Depending on your flight schedule, you may stop at a roadside craft market for last‑minute souvenirs before being dropped at the airport or your hotel. As you say goodbye to Rwanda, you’ll carry with you vivid memories of close‑up gorilla encounters, golden monkey antics and the warmth of Rwandan hospitality.
