Gorilla trekking 4 Days Rwanda Uganda Gorilla Safari – Double Gorilla Trek
Our 4 days Rwanda Uganda gorilla safari is designed for travellers who want a short but intense primate adventure, with the unique chance to trek mountain gorillas in both Rwanda and Uganda. The safari starts and ends in Kigali, taking you first to Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and then across the border to Uganda’s Mgahinga Gorilla National Park for a second gorilla encounter.
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali & City Tour
Your 4 days Rwanda Uganda gorilla safari begins in Kigali, Rwanda’s clean and vibrant capital. After meeting your driver–guide, you set off on a guided city tour. Highlights include local food and craft markets, where you can interact with vendors and see everyday Kigali life, and a moving visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, which commemorates the more than one million Rwandans who died in the 1994 genocide.
This introduction gives you important historical and cultural context before heading into the countryside. In the late afternoon, you drive north through rolling hills to Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda’s most famous national park and home to the country’s endangered mountain gorillas. Dinner and overnight at a lodge near the park.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda
Today is the first highlight of your 4 days Rwanda Uganda gorilla safari. After an early breakfast, you transfer to the park headquarters for a briefing from the rangers. You are assigned to one of the 12 habituated gorilla families and, together with experienced trackers and guides, you hike into the bamboo and montane forest to look for them.
The trek can take from one to several hours depending on where the gorillas spent the previous night, but the effort is richly rewarded. Once you find your gorilla family, you are allowed up to one hour in their presence. Watch them feed, groom each other and play, while the silverback keeps a watchful eye over the group. Because only a limited number of permits are available each day, it is essential to reserve this Rwanda gorilla trekking experience well in advance.
After descending from the forest, you return to your lodge to relax. Depending on time and interest, you may opt for a cultural visit, a guided nature walk or simply enjoy the views of the Virunga volcanoes from your lodge.
Day 3: Cross to Uganda – Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
After breakfast you leave Volcanoes National Park and drive towards the Rwanda–Uganda border. Formalities are usually straightforward with your driver–guide assisting throughout. You then continue into Uganda to reach Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, the smallest but one of the most scenic parks in the country, lying on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes.
Mgahinga protects the transboundary Nyakagezi gorilla family as well as beautiful golden monkeys. In the afternoon you can relax at the lodge or join an optional cultural walk to a nearby Batwa community, learning about the traditional forest‑dwelling lifestyle of the people who once lived inside these forests.
Day 4: Gorilla Trek in Uganda & Return to Kigali
The final day of your 4 days Rwanda Uganda gorilla safari is dedicated to a second gorilla trek, this time on the Ugandan side. After a briefing at the park offices, you hike with rangers into the forest to search for the Nyakagezi gorilla family. Tracking conditions and rules are similar to those in Rwanda: group sizes are limited, only visitors aged 15 and above may trek, and once you locate the gorillas you are allowed a maximum of one hour with them.
Seeing mountain gorillas in two different national parks offers a rare opportunity to compare habitats, landscapes and behaviour. After your time with the gorillas you descend the forest, return to the lodge for lunch and then drive back to Kigali. Your guide will drop you at the airport in time for your afternoon or evening flight, marking the end of this memorable double‑gorilla adventure.
